It’s no mystery or surprise that Long Island has a lot of traffic. Expressways are often jam-packed with drivers on their way to work, to the beach, or any of the many attractions this area has to offer. Because of its popularity as a tourist attraction and its already-dense population, Long Island suffers from congested traffic on a regular basis.
The Clean Pass Vehicle program is a program that allows certain drivers to use the High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes on the Long Island expressway. This joint effort on behalf of the NYS Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Conservation, and Department of Motor Vehicles encourages the purchase and use of fuel-efficient and low-emissions vehicles by allowing owners of these “green” cars to save time on their commute.
BMW vehicles that qualify for the pass include the 2011 BMW 1 Series Active E, the 2014 through 2016 BMW i3 BEV, and the 2014 through 2016 BMW i3 REX. Registered owners of eligible vehicles may obtain the Clean Pass Sticker by going to the local DMV and applying for a pass. You may also apply over the phone or online.
The sticker grants drivers access to the full 40-mile stretch of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes on both the eastbound and westbound directions. The reliability of the HOV lanes is protected by law enforcement patrol officers from both the Suffolk and Nassau police departments, ensuring these lanes will always be open for use by approved vehicles with a Clean Pass sticker.
If you are eligible and have applied, you should expect your sticker to come in the mail within 10 days. If you are interested in a vehicle that is eligible for the program, we here at Habbarstad BMW of Huntington would be happy to help you browse our inventory of efficient and eco-friendly vehicles in a search of a new ride.
